INTERNAL DIVERSIONS
Shift, a collaborative exhibition at William Traver Gallery in 2005, featured Charlotte Meyer and Maria Phillips, both known for their sculptural explorations of the body and nature. The exhibition emerged from an ongoing dialogue between the artists on the cultural iconography of women’s lives, the human body, and natural forms. Conceived as a three-dimensional extension of this conversation, Shift also reflected the influence of their collaboration on their artistic processes and ideas.
At the center of the exhibition was Internal Diversions, a large-scale hanging sculpture made of glass, steel, and silver. Meticulously constructed from mirrored blown glass, the piece evoked organic systems and physical ornamentation. Its reflective orbs captured the viewer’s image, transforming the work from a conceptual self-portrait of the artists into an interactive experience where the audience became an integral part of the piece.
